Pharmaplan, Specialists in Pharmaceutical Process
and
Facility Design.

Pharmaplan was established in 1974 to provide engineering and
consultancy support to the pharmaceutical industry. Over the years, Pharmaplan has
developed a worldwide reputation for delivering first class engineering solutions, with
offices in Bad Homburg, Paris, Birchwood, New Delhi, Moscow, Basle, Sao Paulo, Montreal
and Philadelphia. These offices combined employ 350engineers, solely dedicated to the
pharmaceutical industry.
Pharmaplan has organised itself into regional offices at the above locations. Each regional
office is split into business units, which are based on the technology required in their
particular location around the world.
Currently, Pharmaplan have the following business units: Consulting, Bulk Active
Ingredients, Sterile Processes, Solid Dosage Forms, Creams & Ointments, Finishing
& Packaging, Purified Water, Medical Disposables, Validation and Support Services.
Pharmaplan's philosophy is that the total facility design is led from a process
requirement. Therefore, Pharmaplan develop the process and the spatial requirements around
it prior to designing the facility. The building enclosure being a requirement of the
process means that this must follow the development of the process and its spatial
requirements. Pharmaplan does not therefore employ on-staff architects, structural
engineers, and electrical engineers.
Each regional office has a tremendous wealth of experience which enables Pharmaplan to
respond to virtually any requirement from the pharmaceutical industry. The Consulting
group provides feasibility and concept studies for both new and refurbishment projects.
The Consultancy team also provide training for both operational and procedural
requirements, and in association with our management consultants, who have a wide
pharmaceutical experience, Pharmaplan can provide a total consultancy service.
Pharmaplan uses a variety of computer aided design techniques to formulate design
solutions. One of these, is Logistics simulation.
The advantages of simulating production processes, is the dynamic observation of a very
complex event, sometimes consisting of only a few elements. Unlike static planning,
inter-dependant relationships of the machines within the department or the whole factory
can be taken into account. By statistical evaluation of efficiency profiles of all
production elements, a very precise economic analysis of the planned project can be
determined.
The requirements for the production and handling of sterile liquids and powders are very
much dependant on the type of product and its ingredients. Infusion solutions, eye drops,
concentrates, products for enteral nutrition or sterile powders, all present different
challenges to the engineer. The Business Unit for Sterile Processes has provided
appropriate solutions for the process and the facility design for a variety of products
in a variety of locations around the world.
The company has an impressive track record in the design and installation of production
facilities for the manufacture of tablets and capsules. These facilities generally include
processes from weighing-in stage, powder handling, granulation, tabletting, capsulation
and coating through to packaging and storage, and occasionally special areas for highly
active substances, antibiotics and solvents.
The production of all disposable items for a modern health system such as catheters,
dialysers, blood tubing systems, infusions sets, syringes, cannulas, fibres, urine bags,
etc. requires professional plant systems. Pharmaplan has a business unit with engineers
experienced and solely dedicated to this area of technology.
One of the most crucial stages of any project is when the construction is completed and
the validation and training of staff starts. Very often, this is the period when the end
user begins to familiarise him/herself with the plant and the facility, including the HVAC
system and controls. He/she will subsequently need answers to a large number of queries on
the design and operation of the plant. This is also the unfortunate period when the
contractors have moved off site and are often busy with other projects and therefore are
sometimes reluctant or have no time to answer queries promptly.
With Pharmaplan this problem does not arise. The company has a business unit, which deals
with all matters relating to validation, training of staff and all queries arising
following a construction project. Pharmaplan will continue to support the user for as long
as it is required to do so. What sets Pharmaplan
apart from almost all other similar organisations is their total commitment to the
pharmaceutical industry. The management of the company had decided from inception, not to
steer off their main area of expertise and they have stuck to this task so far, and all
indications are that they will in the future.
